Hawaiians call the manta ray hahalua, and off the Kona coast they gather after dark to feed where the light draws the plankton in. Divers who float below them describe the same thing every time. A slow, winged shadow passing overhead, close enough to feel the water move.
This design catches that glide in daylight. Sunbeams pour through the surface inside a ringed circle scene, a manta banks over living coral, butterflyfish scatter below, and hibiscus and plumeria frame the blue. Every manta carries a spot pattern on its belly as individual as a fingerprint, and researchers use those markings to know each one by name.
